Prof. Dr. Okan Doğu graduated from Istanbul University Cerrahpaşa Faculty of Medicine in 1990. He completed his specialization training at the Neurology Clinic of Bakırköy Mental and Neurological Diseases Hospital in 1997. In 2000, he became a faculty member at Mersin University Faculty of Medicine, Department of Neurology, and in 2005, he became an associate professor. He currently works as a professor in the same department.

In 2003, 2004, and 2006, Prof. Dr. Okan Doğu conducted Parkinson’s disease genetics-related research at the Neurogenetics Laboratory of the National Institutes of Health, National Institute on Aging in the United States. He also participated in clinical studies at the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke during those years.

Prof. Dr. Okan Doğu, since December 2018, has been serving as a visiting faculty member at the Medipol University Faculty of Medicine. Additionally, he provides support as a medical advisor for the diagnosis and treatment of patients at Istanbul Medipol University Parkinson’s Disease and Movement Disorders Center (PARMER).

In 2004, he received the Bruce S. Schoenberg Neuroepidemiology Award from the American Academy of Neurology for his study titled “Prevalence of Essential Tremor in Mersin Province

He served as a Board Member (2008-2012), Secretary General (2012-2014), and Vice President (2014-2018) of the Parkinson’s Disease Association.

He is a member of the Movement Disorders working group of the Turkish Neurology Society. He has published more than 50 articles in internationally refereed journals and national journals, including Neurology, Annals of Neurology, Movement Disorders, Journal of Neurology, Neurosurgery, and Psychiatry, Neuroepidemiology, Journal of Neurology, Parkinsonism and Related Disorders, Neurotoxicology, European Journal of Neurology, Journal of Epidemiology, Tremor, and other movement disorders. He serves as a reviewer for many international journals, including Tremor and Other Movement Disorders and Journal of Parkinson’s Disease and Restless Legs Syndrome.

His primary research areas are the epidemiology, genetics, and sleep disorders of movement disorders. He has written a book titled “Questions about Parkinson’s Disease, A Guide for Patients and Their Relatives.” He is one of the editors and chapter authors of the book “Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) in Neurological and Psychiatric Disorders” (2019).
