Tremor means trembling or shaking and it can be seen along with a lot of diseases. It can be observed as a symptom of many diseases like Parkinson’s, essential tremor, cerebellar pathology or peripheric neuropathy.
Essential tremor, the most encountered movement disorder, usually occurs in people over 60 years old. Tremor can create a serious problem for the person when performing daily activities. It can decrease the quality of life of the patient when eating or working really hard.
The cause of the essential tremor disease is not known. It usually starts in the hands and arms, and then spreads to other areas. The symptoms of this disease increase under intense stress.
Tremor gets mixed with Parkinson’s disease most of the time, but it is a different condition. The main difference between Parkinson’s and essential tremor is that the tremor is seen on when the patient is moving, and it stops when the patient is relaxing in essential tremor patients. With Parkinson’s disease though, Tremor does not stop whether the patient is moving or not and particulary is observed when the patient is not using his or her hands.
Essential tremors are treated with medication or surgical options. When the medical treatment is not enough, the patients can have the “deep brain stimulation (DBS)” operation that is done in our clinic with a high ratio of success and get back to living their daily life easily and comfortably.
Treatment of diseases such as Parkinson’s, essential tremor and dystonia
The first treatment for movement disorders that occur with tremor like Parkinson’s is medical treatment. For the patients that do not respond well to the medical treatment or that have intense tremor attacks, deep brain stimulation procedure gives successful results. This method is also efficient to treat the symptoms of the Parkinson’s patients who only have stiffness and slowness, but not tremor. Additionally, essential tremor and dystonia, which causes intense bodily contractions, are two of the diseases that are successfully treated with deep brain stimulation operation when the medical treatment is not enough.
